Beijing, Qingdao Youths Mark May 4th Movement with CPC-themed Activities

2021/05/10

Activities to review the spirit of the May 4th Movement, a patriotic campaign launched by Chinese youth in 1919 against imperialism and feudalism, were held on May 1 to 4 in the nation's capital, Beijing, and the coastal city of Qingdao, in East China's Shandong Province.

As part of a nation-wide publicity and education campaign for children and teenagers themed "Always Following the Party," the four-day activity series called on younger generations to carry on the spirit of the May 4th Movement and remember the history of the Communist Party of China (CPC). The aim was to encourage them to firmly march on the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics and celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the CPC.

Twenty-six students from Beijing Chenjinglun High School and the University of International Business and Economics Affiliated High School first visited the New Culture Movement Memorial of Beijing. They listened to the teacher's lecture on the history of the May 4th Movement.

The students immersed themselves in the spirit of the May 4th Movement and exchanged their feelings and experiences. They learned about the historical background of the May 4th Movement, why Peking University became the center of the New Culture Movement, the inscriptions in the Monument to the People's Heroes, the historical meaning of the May 4th Movement, and the relationship between the May 4th Movement and the founding of the CPC.

Students give a performance on the history of occupation at Qingdao North Railway Station on May 4, recalling the glorious path to today's hard-won happy life.

With the help of Qingdao Metro, more than 120 parents and students from all walks of life in the city staged a public benefit performance at Qingdao North Railway Station on May 4. Students from the Qingdao No. 9 High School and Qingdao No. 37 High School presented poetry highlighting the sharp contrast between the city's history of occupation by foreign powers 100 years ago and the overall well-off society- today. The poetry recitation program showcased the brilliant achievements made by the people under the Party's leadership.

Xu Mengyang, an associate research fellow of BGI Genomics Institute's Qingdao branch, delivered a speech to inspire teenagers to aim high and strive to be the leaders of tomorrow. After obtaining his doctorate abroad, Xu decided to return to the motherland and devote himself to the nation's high-tech development goals.

More than 70 children performed a large-scale stage drama integrating music, dance, poetry and painting, with the theme of "Great Party, Youthful City," pushing the day's activities to a climax. The poem Sishui, also known as "Dead Water," written by Chinese patriotic poet Wen Yiduo (1899-1946), reflected the suffering of China when it was reduced to a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society.

Tagged with keyword "pursuing," the stage play strung together the milestones in the history of modern China. The story began from 1921's mega-event: when the CPC's founders convened the Party's First National Congress and announced the Party's founding on a small boat, later known as the Red Boat, on Nanhu Lake in Jiaxing. The performance highlighted the great achievements after the founding of the People's Republic of China.

The educational tours allowed youngsters to further explore the revolutionary journey of their predecessors and stimulated a deeper understanding of the Party's centurial efforts towards self-improvement, said Wan Zeqian, a second grader from Qingdao No. 9 High School.

The activity encouraged younger generations to promote the spirit of the May 4th Movement and strengthened their confidence in their path and culture, injecting a powerful impetus into young blood, she added.

The CPC-themed activity, as a publicity and education campaign to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of CPC, is designed to help children and teenagers learn more about the Party's history, understand the Chinese culture and Chinese path, appreciate the striving spirit of Party members and nurture all-round socialist builders and successors.
