On 17th of May 2010, KPMG-CCTF community center, an earth-friendly green 450-squre metre community centre with straw bale and reconstituted bamboo has started to be used for local children’s extracurricular activities and villagers’ vocational training. Mr. John Harrison, Deputy Chairman, KPMG International and Mr. Carlson Tong, Chairman of KPMG China, Madame Cheng Shuqin, Vice president of China children and Teenagers’ Fund attended the opening ceremony.
This centre is an outstanding example of China-UK cooperation foreseen in the China-UK MOU on Green Buildings and Eco-Cites signed in Beijing on 29th March 2010 by Vice-Minister of MOHURD (Ministry of Housing and Urban/Rural Development) and HMA on behalf of UKTI.
The main donor, KPMG China, in partnership with China Children and Teenagers’ Fund (CCTF) and Chengdu Women's Federation, has helped to build an earth-friendly green community centre in Cifeng Township in Pengzhou City at Sichuan Province. It is a part of effort to renovate the province’s earthquake stricken area and to promote the development of the local communities. The project, named “KPMG-CCTF Community Centre”, is the world’s first long-span frame structure building built by reconstituted bamboo, and it is built with state-of-the-art, quake-resistant technology.
Integer China, which has also donated their design services to the project pro bono, has made full-used of its locally sourced materials in building a people-oriented, energy-saving and environmentally sustainable village’s structure. The project’s main construction materials have come from renewable resources as an example innovative and sustainable technology with materials that used reconstituted bamboo, straw bale wall and timber window, as for its frame’s structure. The project is also encouraging green energy by designing equipment and facilities like solar light tube, LED lamp and biogas.
The design concept, which was unveiled at the 2010 Beijing Intelligent Green & Energy Efficient Buildings Convention, has been widely recognized domestically and overseas. It has been awarded the “2009 National Human Settlement Best Practice Gold Medal” in December 2009 and in this year May, it won “Leadership Bauhinia Award” in Hong Kong. The “KPMG-CCTF Community Centre” project is presented as one of the best practice cases for sustainable living/environmental protection promotion at the ZED pavilion of the Shanghai World Expo due to its distinct energy-saving and environmental conscious features.
The total cost of the project is approximately RMB 3 million. KPMG China’s staffs and KPMG Foundation have funded through donations of RMB1.1 million in cash and with other free services. The funded equipment supplied worth over RMB 2 million. This project has received manpower, resources and financial support from 30 domestically and international enterprises, research institutions and government agencies such as Integer China/Oval Partnership, I&G Systems, Dasso, Jialan, Panel Board Holding, Solatube, BOGE, Sichuan Jiuzhou Photoelectric Technology, Daitang and many more key contributors.
The project has advanced rural community development by means of corporate sponsorship, public participation and public-private partnership. It will serve as a paragon for improving educational, cultural and recreational facilities in rural communities.
