The China Children and Teenagers' Foundation (CCTF) launched a summer camp for children who have been practicing the altruistic spirit of Lei Feng at the Chinese Museum of Women and Children in Beijing on July 31, 2013.
Lei Feng was a People's Liberation Army (PLA) soldier known for his selfless service for the people. He died in 1962 at the age of 22. In 1963, Chairman Mao initiated a nationwide campaign to encourage people to follow Lei Feng's selflessness, dedication and altruism.
CCTF launched a national campaign earlier this year to encourage children nationwide to take part in activities to mark the 50th anniversary of Chairman Mao's call to learn from Lei Feng. A total of 90 students from 11 ethnic groups recommended by 29 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC) will participate in the summer camp.
CCTF Secretary-General Chen Xiaoxia said at the launch ceremony that the camp participants will be taken to see the flag-raising ceremony at Tian'anmen Square, tour the National Museum of China, visit the Palace Museum and the Great Wall and experience college life at Tsinghua University.
Vice President of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) and CCTF Deputy Director Zhao Donghua later presented the camp flag to the students, encouraging them to continue drawing motivation from Lei Feng, carry forward the traditional virtues of the Chinese nation, act according to socialist morals and develop good social customs.
Some of the participants from central China's Henan Province, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region also put on a performance during the event.
President of the Guangxi Wuzhou Zhongheng Group Xu Shuqing and 160 other representatives from women's federations and the media were also present at the launch ceremony.
With the support of the Guangxi Wuzhou Zhongheng Group, CCTF has launched a series of campaigns nationwide to promote the Lei Feng spirit. Last year, the foundation donated 100,000 copies of the Collection of Lei Feng's Articles to schools across the country.
CCTF was established in 1981 as the first charitable foundation in China. Over the last 32 years, it has strived to improve the education and welfare of Chinese children, especially those in rural and ethnic minority areas. Some of its most influential charity projects are the Spring Bud Project, Safe and Healthy Growth Project and the Action to Eliminate Infant Anemia.
