President of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) Shen Yueyue visited several cities in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to assess women's and children's work on August 21-25, 2013.
Accompanied by Vice President and Member of the Secretariat of the All-China Women's Federation Chen Xiurong, Shen distributed nutritional packages to families in Xialiugong Village in the Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture on August 22, 2013. The packages are part of the Action to Eliminate Anemia Amongst Infants and Children.
Yang Zhiqin and his wife in the village said that they hope the nutritional packages will help their baby recover from anemia. Shen also gave the couple a brochure explaining how the packages work and gave them more information on the project.
The project was launched by the All China Women's Federation, Ministry of Health and China Children and Teenagers' Foundation to alleviate and eliminate iron-deficiency anemia among infants and promote infant health by providing nutritional packages to infants between the ages of 6-to-36 months-old in poverty-stricken rural areas. So far, it has benefited 530,000 infants in 73 impoverished counties in western China.
The National Action to Eliminate Infant Anemia will be supported by the Central Special Lottery Public Welfare Fund from 2013 to 2015 and will provide packages to 22 project trial counties in the Shanxi, Sichuan and Gansu provinces and the Ningxia Hui, Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang Uygur autonomous regions. It is expected to benefit more than 51,300 infants in Xinjiang.
