On February 21, 2014, Jiani, a primary school girl, donated 100 yuan (US$ 16.33) she had earned from saving her pocket money and selling newspapers to the China Children and Teenagers' Foundation (CCTF) in Beijing.
Jiani's mother, surnamed Li learned about the "Little Newspaper Charity Seller" program and wanted her daughter to take part in it. The program was organized by the CCTF to encourage children and teenagers to participate in charity. Li purchased 50 newspapers and encouraged Jiani and her friends to sell them.
Jiani, a grade four student at the Primary School affiliated to the Capital Normal University, enjoyed the experience and said it was fun, despite having to brave the freezing weather when she sold newspapers during Lantern Festival, which fell on February 14 this year.
"A young man bought 10 copies after learning that we were selling for charity. A young woman bought one but donated 10 yuan (US$ 1.63)," Jiani said.
Jiani said she wanted to take part in more programs similar to this one.
Jiani's mother agreed, and said she wanted Jiani to take part in other charitable events during her summer and winter school holidays. "It is a good educational opportunity, and easy and fun for children," she said.
