China Children and Teenagers' Fund (CCTF) recently launched the "Children's Safety Education Project" locally in Wenzhou, a city in east China's Zhejiang Province, in partnership with the local education bureau.
A cooperation agreement was signed by both sides at the launch ceremony. As stipulated in the deal, efforts will be made to build safer school buildings for children and boost staff training in teaching safety, so as to achieve a 50 percent or more safety education coverage in the city's schools by 2018.
Due to lower abilities in self-care and a lack of vigilance, children tend to suffer the most from natural disasters, traffic accidents, drowning and other dangers. Under these circumstances, the fund first initiated the safety education project for China in 2010, with support from seven departments including the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Public Security.
The project will further help children gain knowledge and skills in coping with emergencies. So far, a total of 196 "Safe Classrooms" and three "Safe Centers" have been built nationwide from publicly raised funding, benefiting over 8 million teachers and students.
