A series of charity events on the theme "Where There is Love, There is Always Home" is scheduled to soon take place in Huangjing Towship, Shaoyang County, central China's Hunan Province, to address the issue over the large number of local children who live without a mother.
Financially supported by the China Children and Teenagers' Foundation (CCTF), the campaign puts the spotlight on parental care and concern from the foundation and nearby women's federations.
According to a survey conducted by local government, there are 123 kids at schools in the area who live without a mother, leading to its nickname as the "motherless village."
The phenomena of "left-behind" children (those whose parents have left them to go and find better paying jobs in the large cities) has been cited as one cause for the situation, along with other reasons. Most "motherless" children are kept under the care of their father, close-relatives or grandparents.
Planning a charity event is an involving process, say organizers. From establishing Sweet Home centers to soliciting volunteers for visiting youngsters—the CCTF has now planned to contribute even more to helping those children.
Jointly launched by the CCTF and the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) in 2014, the nationwide "Sweet Home" campaign has so far set up some 349 special centers for children across the country.
According to the CCTF and ACWF, they will soon establish between six to eight homes in various villages in Huangjing in order to enrich children's lives and help them to shake off mental problems.
More efforts will be made as the campaign is initiated, including offering guidance from psychologists, surveys, daily visits and diversifying children's social activities.
