A grant-release ceremony for "China Children and Teenagers' Foundation (CCTF) Poverty Alleviation" was held at the Civilization Office of Huan County in northwest China's Gansu Province on September 2. About 30 poverty-stricken students received a total of 110,000 yuan (U.S. $17,300).
All of these students were recommended by local schools and village committees, as confirmed by the Civilization Office and other county departments. Among them, 20 pupils and middle school students received 3,000 yuan (U.S. $470) each and 10 college students 5,000 yuan (U.S. $780) each. Some have lost their parents and live with their relatives; some of their parents have contracted serious illnesses, resulting in high debts and little fixed incomes; and some of their families have encountered sudden accidents and could not raise tuition fees.
The foundation's move will not only help relieve poverty among students, but also inspire them to be more enterprising. It will closely follow the lives of the funded students to make sure they receive a successful education.
