Chen Luchao, a charity-minded netizen from Luzhou City, southwest China's Sichuan Province, paid a visit to Quan Xingyuan, a teenage girl who'd benefitted from his financial support in Suiyang County, southwest China's Guizhou Province, on January 22.
Chen's charity action was part of the "One-to-One Assistance & Spring Bud" initiative, which was jointly launched by the China Children and Teenagers' Foundation (CCTF) and the Tencent Foundation in September 2015. The initiative aims to provide girls from poverty-stricken families across the nation with multiple means of assistance in their studies and lives under the support of charity-minded enterprises and individuals from all walks of life in China.
Learning of the initiative, Chen kicked off a fundraising event for target children amongst his friends on September 7, 2015, and managed to raise 4,000RMB (U.S.$610). He then quickly transferred the fund to the CCTF, which later informed him of the result of his charitable action.
Meanwhile, he became the first netizen to send a donation to the CCTF since its establishment.
With support from other netizens, the CCTF, and local women's federation, Chen made a trip to the home of Quan, who is a first-year student at a local high school, this January. Quan has lived with her mother, who is a sanitary worker in the county, since her father divorced her mother when Quan was 8-years-old. The family has to live on her mother's humble salary, which is about 1,000RMB (U.S.$152) per month.
During the visit, Chen brought with him many gifts for Quan, who conveyed her deep thanks to him and spoke about her academic studies with regret since she didn't perform well in her latest test due to the negative impact of her illness. Seeing this, he encouraged Quan to be optimistic and brave in her life, and pledged that he and other netizens would continue their efforts to finance her studies.
On the sidelines of his tour, Chen visited another girl from a local underprivileged family, who had received financial assistance from his friend. In addition, he also decided to assist another local girl.
According to the CCTF, the charity initiative has collected a total of 1.51 million RMB (U.S.$230,124) from more than 50,000 charity-minded netizens so far, whose efforts have greatly improved the lives of underprivileged girls across the nation.
